Ugly Dual Meet Situation, need help. Empty Ugly Dual Meet Situation, need help.

I had a bad day on the mat, for several reasons I won't get into, mostly because I did not do a great job today. Mad Evil or Very Mad

Here is the very ugly story. This is MS dual match:

Team A gets a forfeit at 122 from Team B. Instead, Team A 122 and Team B 128 report to the table. The scorekeeper doesn't check the lineup, and sends them out. Team A wins by decision.
Now, Team A sends out their 128 wrestler and Team B sends out their 134. The scorekeeper does not see the problem again, they wrestle and team A wins.
Then team A sends out their 134 for and Team B sends out their their 150. Then the problem is discovered. affraid

Now I am in the middle of a complete mess. the matches are over, the Wrestlers have been made a winner, and have left the wrestling area (mat and table). Which by rule tells me the matches are over, and cannot be re-wrestled.

The rule book offers no help on this situation that I can find, and that included a previous edition or two. Here's what was suggested: study

One suggestion is that the 122 match and the 128 match are both bad time. Then once we fix who is now up, we finish the other matches and re-wrestle the two mismatches.
Another suggestion is that we may have a forfeit, since Team B had to report first to he mat, and the incorrect wrestler showed up. Problem is team A's wrestler showed up first in both cases, so I don't see how that works. Question
I believe neither solution works.

How we solved the problem was this: Team B had bumped two wrestlers up, to 128 and 134. However, they were eligible to wrestle 122 and 128 because of their weight. so the coach, who probably messed things up in the first place by bumping up two kids who needed to wrestle at their weight, offered to count those matches at 122 and 128, and forfeit 134 and 142, which would have happened if he hadn't bumped the kids. The we have the 150's go at it, and finish the dual. Suspect

So what happens? The scorer, who is a HS wrestler, then messes up the rest of the bouts, and we have to reconstruct the scoring of the dual from both teams scoresheets, which ends up being 40-38 Team B. The match scores were all correct, but I feel like a total and complete jerk, and at least one team feels like they might have gotten a raw deal, since another official, a very nice young guy, threw in the idea of forfeits in the weight classes within earshot of the losing coach.

I know, it's my fault for not double-checking before every bout the weight classes of the two wrestlers. I made the assumption that both coaches had a clue about who was wrestling who, and the scorekeeper wouldn't royally screw up the scoresheet. But neither matters, it's my fault.

Suggestions please. Thanks!

(P.S. in some way justice was served, the losing coach got out his rule book and tried to convince me I missed a takedown when his wrestler supposedly takes a kid down, but the kid he gets is lying out of bounds when he lands, and his kid lands with both knees and feet our of bounds as well, and he doesn't do anything to get them inbounds. Of course, the action happens on the other side of the mat from his bench.) Twisted Evil

At first read, I would have said that you go back and recreate everything from the 122 match forward since Team B's 128 wasn't eligible for the 122 wt class. But as I read on, you stated that Team B's wrestler who reported at the 122 wt class WAS eligible (coach wanted to bump him to 128 but he actually made weight for the 122 class) it sounds like you guys handled it correctly. Same thing for the 128 class and so on until you found two mismatched wrestlers. If the wrestler is eligible for the weight class, it doesn't matter what Team B's "bumping" plans were.

My only thought is, what weight class did Team B's wrestlers actually weigh in at? During weigh ins did Team B's wrestler weigh in when the 122 class was called or did he weigh in with the 128's? It makes a difference. If he weighed in with the 122 class, all is good but if he weighed in with the 128's, even if he made the 122 wt, he would only be eligible for 128 class.

With that said, I still think it was probably handled the best way possible.

Glad it happened to you instead of me.

WT,

Thanks for the kind words. The HC of the kids who went up had a signed copy of the weigh-in sheets with him, and they were eligible to wrestle at the lower weights.

A quick technique that I use, if I'm not at the table between weight classes is to look at each wrestler and say their weight class. Usually most will know at least that much and I'm pretty sure I have the right two kids, at least in duals.

I use the same technique that matref uses as check to see if I have the right guys. Of course sometimes it's just so I can see what weight class we are on so I can figure out how many more matches I have left! LOL.

Hi matref,

I am curious what would bring you to the table between matches at a dual, unless the table called you over (or a coach wanted a misconduct jocolor )

jk,

A few things:

1) You can watch the two new wrestlers as they approach the table to make sure they are properly equipped. A wrestler may be coming to the table to check in and he may still have his shorts on. I can be preventative and say "you haven't checked in yet but you got your shorts on."

2) Ensure the correct wrestlers check in and in order depending on odd or even.

3) Get a sip of water.

Makes sense. I guess I'm in the habit of staying away from the table unless I'm needed. Mainly because I too often make the mistake of assuming coaches, wrestlers and table people know what they are doing and don't need me to interfere. Learn something new every day.
